RF Dynamic Range

In crowded FM spectrums that are very common in urban settings, the abundance of radio stations can overwhelm the radio receiver tuned to a desired station whose signal strength is relatively weak. The most severe and common non-linear distortion resulting from strong interferers is third order inter-modulation (IMD3) distortion resulting from two strong close-in blockers that show up on-channel on a weak desired station tuned to.

USB FM Radio design is intended as a reference for incorporating FM radio functionality into a USB product. The design consists of two major components, the Si4701 FM radio receiver and the C8051F321 microcontroller with a built-in universal serial bus (USB) peripheral. Due to the high level of system integration of both of these components, the total design is very small with fewer external components than many other solutions.

Overview

The C8051 microcontroller controls the Si4701 using the serial peripheral interface (SPI). The Si4701 audio outputs are sampled using the C8051F321′s analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and sent to the host across the USB interface. The Windows application plays the audio using the PC speakers or headphones.

Firmware

The overall organization of the firmware is straightforward. It begins by initializing all necessary device peripherals and the Si4701 FM tuner. Once this is complete, the microcontroller operates in one of two modes, command or audio. In command mode, the device can accept control commands from the USB host for operations such as seeking, tuning, or saving presets. In audio mode, the microcontroller sends ADC samples and a small amount of status information up to the host. The MCU enters audio mode once the host has started polling for audio data, and exits when it receives any command from the host.

USB Profile—This device presents four different interfaces to the host when it enumerates. Three of these are active at any given time. The audio control interface is used by the host to control different parts of the audio functions. There is also a zero-bandwidth streaming interface and a full-bandwidth streaming interface. Only one of these interfaces is used at a time. Finally, there is a Human Interface Device (HID) interface used for all other required device communication, such as controlling the Si4701 and upgrading the C8051F321 flash image.

ADC Sampling—The 10-bit ADC on the C8051F321 is used to sample both the audio channels. The ADC sample rate is 192 kHz, and it switches between the right and left channel between successive conversions using the onchip ADC multiplexer. The audio sample rate for stereo samples is consequently 96 kHz, and each audio sample is 4 bytes in size. These are sent to the host in signed two’s complement format.

USB Transfer Type—The audio streaming interface uses isochronous USB transfers to send audio data to the host. Since the audio sample rate is 96 kHz and each sample is 4 bytes in size, the device transfers 384 bytes per millisecond across the bus.

Microcontroller Flash Upgrade—The firmware includes a command interpreter that is capable of upgrading the device’s flash image. This code is capable of parsing HID commands to read/write and check integrity of flash pages. However, it is not a true boot loader because it not functional without a valid external code image to handle USB enumeration. This means that if the flash upgrade process fails, the device will be inoperable.

The DCF-77 radio time and frequency transmission is broadcast from Mainflingen near Frankfurt, Germany. The DCF-77 signal can be used by timing equipment to provide a precise time reference. Computer timing equipment, such as NTP server systems, which provide an accurate time reference for computer networks can utilise the broadcast as an accurate external source of time. This article describes how the DCF-77 signal can be decoded to provide an accurate time reference for NTP servers and other computer timing applications.

Before describing the format of the transmission, it’s worth mentioning a little about the history of the transmitter. The German National Standard time and frequency radio broadcast, call sign DCF-77, has been in operation since 1959. The broadcast is currently maintained by T-Systems, a sub-division of the German Telecoms company Deuche Telecom. Precise timing information for the broadcast is generated from caesium Atomic Clocks maintained by the German National Physics Laboratory. The transmittor has a power rating of 50W, which can be received up to 1900 km from Frankfurt. Reception can easily be obtained throughout much of central and northwestern Europe. The transmission is broadcast as an amplitude-modulated, pulse-width encoded data signal. Precise timing information is continuously broadcast, repeated each minute. Data is transmitted as a series of 59 pulses, one pulse each second. Each pulse represents a data bit, either a binary one or binary zero. A one hundred millisecond pulse represents a binary zero, while a two hundred millisecond pulse represents a binary one. The pulses can be decoded at the end of the minute into date and time information.

Timing information is represented in the DCF-77 transmission encoded in Binary Coded Decimal format. Data bits are encoded into the transmission as follows. Data bits 1 to 14 are reserved for future enhancements. Bit 15 indicates the transmitter in current operation – primary transmitter or backup transmitter. Bit 16 represents the announcement of daylight saving change. Bit 17 indicates whether daylight saving is currently in use. Bit 18 indicates standard time and is the inverse of bit 17. My Thoughts:

I own two Atomic Clocks and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. The reality of not having to reset the clock after a power failure is priceless. If you’ve ever had to take the time to reset a traditional clock without having a battery backup, then you know the hassle it can be, especially if your neighborhood experiences power outages more than you like. Besides power outages, you also have to reset the traditional clock when it’s Dalight Savings Time. With an Atomic Clock, you set it once and forget it. Now that’s what I call a time saver!

The DCF-77 radio time transmission is utilised by many NTP server and PC computer systems to provide accurate synchronisation of time critical applications. This article describes how the DCF-77 time signal is decoded by NTP server and computer systems to provide an accurate timing reference.

The DCF-77 Time Transmitter.

The DCF-77 time signal is a long-wave radio time signal broadcast from Mainflingen, near Frankfurt, Germany. The radio signal is maintained by T-Systems, a sub-division of Deuche Telecom, and has been in operation since 1959. The DCF-77 signal is generated from extremely accurate Atomic Clocks located at the German National Physics Laboratory. When decoded, it provides a highly accurate timing reference for clocks and computer timing equipment.

DCF-77 Time Code.

Time and date information is transmitted continuously, repeated each minute. The data is transmitted as an amplitude modulated, pulse-width coded data signal. Each data bit is transmitted as one pulse per second. The data transmitted consists of the current time and date, leap second indicator, daylight saving time indicator, transmitter identifier and parity bits.

The duration of each transmitted pulse is decoded as follows: a second mark with a duration of 100 milliseconds is decoded as a binary zero; a second mark with a duration of 200 milliseconds is decoded as a binary one.

Transmitted Data.

Time and date information is presented in BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) format and is encoded as follows: bits 0-14 are unused, but may provide future status information; bit 15 indicates use of backup transmitter; bit 16 (A1), indicates the announcement of daylight saving change; bit 17 (Z1), indicates daylight saving is in use (CEST); bit 18 (Z2), indicates standard time (CET); bit 19 (A2), announces a leap second; bit 20, indicates start of time information; bits 21-27, BCD encoded minutes; bit 28 (P1), parity bit covers bits 21-27; bits 29-34, BDC encoded hours; bit 35 (P2), parity bit covers bits 29-34; bits 36-41, BCD encoded day of month; bits 42-44, BCD encoded day of week; bits 45-49, BCD encoded month of the year; bits 50-57, BCD encoded year; bit 58 (P3), parity bit covers bits 36-57.

The DCF-77 data bits 1-14 are generally unused by any decoding algorithm and may provide status information in future broadcasts. The time zone bits Z1 and Z2 indicate current daylight saving time status. When CET time is being broadcast, Z1 is zero and Z2 is one, for CEST time, Z1 is one and Z2 is zero. The daylight saving change announcement bit, A1, indicates an imminent change to or from CET. The leap second announcement bit indicates the imminent insertion of a leap second. The three parity bits P1-P3 compliment the preceding information to an even number of ones (even parity).

A Radio Controlled Clock offers many advantages over conventional clocks. They can keep perfect time without ever having to be adjusted. How it clock works

Although some manufactures say their Radio Controlled Clocks are Atomic Clocks this is not really true. An atomic clock is operated by a atomic oscillator, while a Radio Controlled Clock has a small radio inside. The radio inside receives a signal from an atomic clock.

The signals received by most Radio Controlled Clocks in America originate near Fort Collins, Colorado from the NIST radio station WWVB. The radio station broadcasts on 60KHZ frequency and the clock with its miniature radio inside is tuned to receive the signal.

The signal 60KHZ is located so far below most other radio signals that it is not interrupted by any other signals put out by radio or television. The signals from radio and television stations are generally transmitted at no lower then 530KHZ. The 60 KHZ can not carry voice or audio and only transmits a code. The code that is broadcast is a binary code or bits and are sent at a slow rate of one bit per second. It is so slow that it takes a full minute to generate a complete time code. This slow rate is why the first time you set it may take up to five full minutes to show the correct time.

Once the clock has received and decoded the code sent from the radio station it will then apply a time zone correction so that it shows local time. The radio station provides the time as Universal Time. When your clock is set and running for the first time it probably will not read the radio signal for at least 4 hours and more likely will only do so once a day. Instead it uses a quartz crystal oscillator to keep time.

Radio Controlled Clocks are very accurate time keepers that actually set themselves one or more times per day. They use a 60KHZ low frequency signal from a radio station to set themselves so they are always right even during daylight savings time.

NTP time servers (Network Time Protocol) are an essential aspect of any computer or technology network. So many applications require accurate timing information that failing to synchronize a network adequately and precisely can lead to all sorts of errors and problems – especially when communicating with other networks.

Accuracy, when it comes to time synchronization, means only one thing – Atomic Clocks. No other method of keeping time is as accurate or reliable as an atomic clock. In comparison to an electronic clock, such as a digital watch, which will lose up to a second a day – an atomic clock will remain accurate to a second over 100,000 years.

Atomic Clocks are not something that can be housed in an average server room though; Atomic Clocks are very expensive, fragile and require full time technicians to control so are usually only found in large scale physics laboratories such as the ones run by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Time – USA) and NPL (National Physical Laboratory – UK).

Getting a source of accurate time from an atomic clock is relatively easy. For a secure and reliable source of atomic clock time there are only two options (the internet can neither be described as secure nor reliable as a source of time):

GPS time
UTC time broadcast on long-wave

GPS time, from the USA’s Global Positioning System, is a time stamp generated onboard the Atomic Clocks on the satellites. There is one distinct advantage about using GPS as a source of time: it is available anywhere on the planet.

All that is required to receive and utilise GPS time is a GPS time sever and antenna; a good clear view of the sky is also needed for an assured signal. Whilst not strictly UTC time (Coordinated Universal Time) being broadcast by GPS (UTC has had 17 leap seconds added to it since the satellites were launched) the timestamp included the information needed for NTP to convert it to the universal time standard.

UTC, however, is broadcast directly from physics laboratories and is available by using a radio referenced NTP server. These signals are not available everywhere but in the USA (the signal is known as WWVB) and most of Europe (MSF and DCF) are covered. These too are highly accurate atomic clock generated time sources and as both methods come from a secure source the computer network will remain secure.

If you have a radio control clock (RCC), then you know without a doubt that your clock is giving the correct time. You know this because that clock is receiving a radio signal that tells the clock exactly what time it is. These kinds of clocks have been around awhile but only became reasonably priced and usable by the general public in the early 90′s. While there are a lot of complicated details about how a radio controlled clock works, the basis of its functioning is actually fairly simple. You can find a lot of options for a new radio control clock at American Time & Signal, where they have many options available.

How a RCC Works

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, also known as NIST, hosts a radio station called WWVB. This radio station sends out a constant signal. This signal fluctuates regularly to signify each second, minute, hour, etc. The fluctuations are read by the radio receiver in a radio control clock and the time is displayed based on the time that is being transmitted to it from the radio station. The fluctuations in signal strength are a ‘Morse code’ of sorts that tells the RCC what time it is, or in the case of manual clocks, they tell the clock operator what time it is, but more about that below.

Types of RCC

You can have a radio control clock in nearly every form you can have a regular clock in. You can have a digital clock, wall clock, or even wrist watch. Most RCCs that are used these days are automatic, but there is still some older semi-automatic and manual clocks that are in existence, and sometimes even in use. Automatic radio control clocks receive the signals from the radio station and automatically adjust the time of the clock to read the exact time. With a semi-automatic RCC, you must set the time on the clock yourself first, and then the time is adjusted based on the radio station signal strength from that point forward. If you are lucky enough to still have a manual RCC that works, then you must listen to the WWVB radio station through a set of headphones, decode the sounds to figure out what the time is, and then change the time on the clock to read the correct time.

The first thing that should be done in trouble shooting is to find out the specific problem. One of the easy things that could help finding the defect is by checking whether the radio works properly or you can check the output volume of all speakers and check whether they are all equal. Once the specific defect is identified, the solution can be easily reached.

There are certain simple remedies to find the defects. First is to check the fade and balance control, this helps to find out which all speaker is working and which are not working. The power cables must be checked when the CD player does not switch on or if the display is fully blank. Another thing to be done is to ensure whether all the fuses are in good condition.

The reason for not receiving the sound in the speaker may be due to break in flow of current through it. Buy a radio shack from any electronics shop and use it to check the current flow through the wires for speakers. The speaker’s grill covers are unscrewed and snapped off. And then the mounted speakers are also removed.

The alligator clips are attached to speaker wires. As the current entering the speaker may not produce the sound you may get an indication that it is a blown speaker. If such an indication does not come then probably there might be a broken wire. Rather than locating the old wire and repairing the fault it is desirable to put a new wire to the speaker.

The next thing one should do for checking for trouble shooting is checking the wiring connected to the backside of the CD player using a flashlight at the back side of the dash board. If all these wiring are safe and secure then disconnect the positive cable from the battery of the car. This will put the CD player back to the factory conditions resetting all its characteristics to the initial stage. This will solve the problem in trouble shooting but you need to tune back all your stations and reset your clock.

There also appears a problem of disc error. In this case clean the disc drive using a lens cleaning solution. A drop of rubbing alcohol can be used for effecting the cleaning power.

One need not head to the service as soon as he encounters a problem in car CD troubleshooting, these simple steps would be like a initial check for your car CD player.

When a new Honda accord is bought, there will be a pre installed stereo system present in the vehicle’s dashboard. In many cases it would be very essential to remove the stereo from its place. For example if one needs to add any new components then the first thing to be done is to remove the stereo unit so as so access the rear speaker wires. There is no need for a professional to remove a stereo if one has a bit of experience and a few tips then anyone can do it. But how to remove a stereo in a Honda accord?

There are a few tools required to do this job. The usage of these tools makes it easy and comfortable while doing the job. The tools includes a trim panel removing tool, a flat head screw driver, and a Philips head screw driver. These are used to loosen the screw and to lift the trim.

The first and foremost thing to do before touching anything is to remove the battery. That is remove the negative terminal of the battery. The cable cramp is loosening with the help if a Philips screw driver. Now the next thing to do is to remove the clock from the car. For this purpose a flat head screw driver can be used. This is because only this screw driver can fit in the small spacing in between the edge of the clock and the panel.

Once the clock is loosen then use your hand to pull it out and remove the wires coming fro the power supply and place it aside until the job is completed. Using a Philips screw driver, the screws present in the back side of the dash opening are removed slowly. In the same way, the two screws present in the bottom of the trim panel are removing with the help of a Philips screw driver.

In the next step after loosening the screws connecting the dash trim panel, the dash trim panel is aside from its original place. While pulling out make sure that first the bottom edges are pulled out and then the rest. While doing this it would be comfortable if you use the hands around the borders of the trim panel.

Now one has to disconnect the connections between the car and the knobs controlling the climate. This is the last component that holds the trim panel to the dash board once this is done then the trim panel can be easily removed. Like the clock, the panel is also kept aside until the job is finished.

In this step the screws surrounding the stereo should be removed with help of a Philips screw driver. Once it is done, the stereo is pulled out slowly from the dash until the wires in the back side are accessible. Now one can remove the wires coming from the antenna, power supply and the wires going to the speakers. So the stereo unit can be removed.

So it is very essential for one to know how to remove a stereo in a Honda accord.
