If you sleep deep and find it very difficult to wake up in the morning you need to change your alarm. Man has been preoccupied with keeping time throughout the existence of civilization itself, and many inventions have been used as a reference for measuring the passage of time. At first, the celestial bodies like the sun and moon, the stars and planets were used to tell the time, and little by little watches, clocks and even unusual wall clocks were built relying on water, mechanical devices, quartz and even atomic energy.

As civilization advanced, more efficient methods of timekeeping were needed, and man evolved from crude devices that could only split the day in halves – before and after noon, to the sophisticated and sometimes unusual wall clocks we have today. A clock must have two basic components: a constant process or action to mark off equal increments of time (such as the movement of the sun in the sky and sand glasses) and a method of keeping track of the increments and displaying the result (the position of the clock’s hands or a digital time display).

The first time pieces started approximately 6,000 years ago for religious rituals. These devises were often candles and lamps. Farmers used sections of time for planting, growing and harvesting. It was not necessary to know the exact time.

The next instrument was Sundials from Egypt which marked the daily progress of the suns movement across the sky. This method was known to be accurate and useful. All clocks have inner workings that would surprise and amaze you. We usually just take it for granted. There are analog clocks which have a face and hands and battery operated and there are digital clocks which are usually powered by an electric current with number displays.

Clocks keep cultures and societies united and functioning. Most western cultures value punctuality especially in the business community. There is a saying, “Time is money!”

Most clocks are mass produced now using cheaper materials such as plastic and metals. Most Americans find that clocks are cheaper then most paintings to help fill their empty walls. They also are a status symbol and bring elegance and character to one’s surroundings.

There are two types of movement. They are mechanical and quartz battery operated. Some mechanical clocks produce a chiming sound. Most humans wear them on their wrists, keep them next to their bed, and display them in almost every room of the house. Although often, they may never pay much thought to their clocks and their function.

Atomic watches and clocks include a tiny antenna and receiver inside that receives a radio signal transmitted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) out of Fort Collins, Colorado.

The signal is broadcast from the radio station WWVB at 1 bit per second data rate on a 60 kHz radio frequency with 50 kW transmit power. The signal originates from an atomic clock residing in Boulder, Colorado at NIST which is accurate to 1 second in 60 million years. With 50 kW of transmit power at this radio frequency, the signal covers a radius of approximately 2,000 miles making the signal receivable throughout the continental United States and much of Canada and Central America.

DO YOU HAVE TO ADJUST FOR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS OR LEAP YEARS?

Incidentally, the time code is sent using Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) format containing minutes, hours, day of the year, and the year as well as daylight savings time and leap year information. Thus, you don’t need to adjust your atomic talking watch for daylight savings times or leap years. However, you will need to tell it your current time zone (e.g., east coast U.S.).

DO ATOMIC TALKING WATCHES WORK OVERSEAS?

If you travel overseas, the U.S. time signal will not reach your watch. However, there are atomic time radio signals transmitted from other countries as well. Not all atomic talking watches or clocks will pick and interpret these non-U.S. time signals. If this is important to you, be sure to check on this before you buy.

In the evolution of watch and clock making, mechanical clocks became the foundation upon which other types of watches and clocks were made. The theory that a mechanical mechanism could “tick” of time in specific, set increments is the basis of both the quartz watch and the atomic clock.

The Americans, Swiss and Japanese all played a part in the invention of the quartz watch. Sinclair’s “Black Watch” was a digital model quartz watch that was introduced in 1975.  It had all kinds of problems from losing or gaining time during the changes in hot and cold weather to creating static that would affect its time keeping abilities simply by walking on nylon carpet or having static due to clothing or air conditioning.  In addition, it had a battery that could only hold a charge for 10 days.  There appeared to be as many returns of this watch as there were sales!

The quartz watch was still a desirable option to explore and many other companies had models of digital quartz watches in the experimental stages and ready to sell.  However, the reliable early quartz watches were still about $125 or more — very expensive for the mid-1970s.  These newer, more expensive watches were at least able to keep good time. In fact all well-made quartz watches kept very accurate time and in 1976 Texas Instruments introduced a model at the Chicago Consumer Electronic Show that could be produced in mass quantities for a mere $20.  

The makings of a quartz watch started with the first watch battery in 1954.  Next came the development of the integrated circuit in 1959.  With light-emitting diodes (LED)being developed around 1962, all of the elements were in place for a digital quartz watch.  In fact, the very first prototype, the Beta 21, came out in 1967.  The development of liquid crystal displays (LCD) in 1968 gave digital watches the look they have today. Pulsar is credited with creating the first digital watch in 1970.

The Atomic Clock

Universal time is measured by an atomic clock which runs by using the element, cesium, to keep it going. Just one gram of cesium is enough of a “fuel” to run an atomic clock for one year.  Cesium is found in granite and the one gram supply can be extracted from a piece of granite that is about a cubic foot in size.

This silvery metal is in liquid form at room temperature and is considered the most electropositive and alkaline element in the periodic table.  It is used as a catalyst in photoelectric cells to react with hydrogen and create the necessary movement of the atoms which create a microwave frequency and natural resonance to define a single second. Large numbers and easy to read. The automatic time keeper works well so therefore is always on perfect time. I have owned a La Crosse weather station for about 4 years now and it works great so therefore I thought another smaller indoor unit for the baby’s room would be a good idea. Time has always been a fascination for mankind although it has only been recently, thanks to the work of Albert Einstein and others, have we have begun to understand exactly what it is.

However, despite our lack of understanding, people have been preoccupied with measuring the passing of time.

Traditionally, due to concepts such as farming and religion, the measurement of time has always been based on the movement of the Earth around the Sun, understandably as the planting and growing of crops is seasonal. Also the movement of the moon has been used to measure the passing of time which has traditionally meant our calendars have been divided by the number of days the Earth goes around the Sun (365) and how long it takes the moon to circle the Earth (28).

However our calendars have always faced a fundamental problem in that the moons orbit or 28 days can be divided by seven days of a week, seven doesn’t go into 365. Furthermore the Earth takes six hours more than just 365 days to circle the sun.

This caused tremendous problems in the early days of calendars as the Roman, Julian Calendar did not  account for enough leap years and farmers soon found themselves unsure of the correct day to plant crops (as summer was slowly becoming winter and vice versa).

Fortunately the Gregorian calendar replaced the Roman calendar and the number of leap years increased to keep the seasons in line with the calendar.

The main use of calendars was to keep track of events such as harvest and religious festivals however when it came to day-to-day timekeeping accuracy didn’t start until the development of the clock in the middle-ages.

Clocks meant for the first time people could know exactly what time of day it was and would no longer have to trust observations and comparisons to measure daily time such as ‘the time it takes to walk a mile’ or ‘when the sun is at its highest. Timescales were also introduced allowing the hours in the day to be aligned with the movement of the Sun so noon would be the day’s zenith.

Following mechanical clocks, electronic clocks soon became favoured as they were far more accurate but it wasn’t until the development of Atomic Clocks in the 1950’s that true accuracy became possible.

After the atomic clock, that are accurate to within a second every million years, it was discovered that the Earth itself is not a reliable time source. The Earth slows in its axis, albeit minutely, but if nothing was done to compensate eventually in a several millennia a day would become night and vice versa.

A new timescale called UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) was developed to compensate for this, it was based on the time told by Atomic Clocks but compensated for the slowing of the Earth by adding Leap Seconds every year or so.

Atomic Clocks and UTC have meant that technologies, such as the Internet and satellite communication have now become possible. Now computers all over the world can communicate with each other using NTP servers (Network Time Protocol). NTP servers ensure the whole world uses the same timescale and means computer networks can communicate successfully all over the world.

The clock in its form that we recognise today has been around since the middle of the fourteenth century. Before then, measuring the passage of time had always been a tricky affair with the movement of the sun being the only reliable method of time-telling and the only clocks being crude sundials or water clocks.

When the first mechanical clocks appeared they were driven by a spring and weight, regulated by a verge-and-foliot escapement, a type of gear system that advances the gear train at regular intervals or ‘ticks’. Not only does a clock ticking come from these original devices but also the familiar clock face was developed.

The first clock to use a minute hand appeared in 1475 and innovations like the pendulum were added making mechanical clocks more and more accurate. Shapes, designs and all sorts of bells, alarms and automaton figures were added to clocks to make them more appealing, the most famous of these being the distinctive cuckoo clock which appeared at the end of the 18th century.

The next big step in the development of clocks didn’t arrive until the twentieth century and the development of electronics when it had been noticed that electrical charges running through crystals, such as quartz, made the crystals resonate at an accurate rate.

These digital clocks could use the traditional clock face of mechanical clocks but also were able to replace it with a digital display that showed the time in numbers.

While digital clocks were more accurate than mechanical clocks and even bigger step towards accuracy was taken with the discovery of Atomic Clocks.

Atomic Clocks work on the principle that the caesium -133 atom has an exact resonance each second (somewhere in the region of over 9 billion a second). This makes Atomic Clocks highly accurate; in fact they are even more accurate than the rotation of the Earth which the national timescale GMT (Greenwich Meantime) used to determine noon. Another timescale, UTC (universal Coordinated Time)) which is based on GMT but allows for the Earth slowing in its rotation by adding ‘leap seconds’ has been developed.

Computer networks use the time from Atomic Clocks by receiving a specialist transmission of the time through radio waves, the GPS network or over the Internet and can synchronise their networks to this UTC time by utilizing NTP (Network Time Protocol) a protocol specifically designed for synchronization.

Ethernet Clocks can be connected to computer networks that run NTP and can display the exact time as told by an atomic clock and display it on a wall or desk. Other analogue and digital wall clocks can also receive a transmission directly from an absolute time source via radio waves and display UTC time that way.

In the evolution of watch and clock making, mechanical clocks became the foundation upon which other types of watches and clocks were made. The theory that a mechanical mechanism could “tick” of time in specific, set increments is the basis of both the quartz watch and the atomic clock.

The Quartz Watch

The Americans, Swiss and Japanese all played a part in the invention of the quartz watch. One of the first quartz watches ever built for mass market distribution was made by the Sinclair Company. It had the right idea, using quartz crystals to complete an electrical circuit that would move a mechanical movement in precise increments, but the outer casing and primitive use of the quartz proved disastrous.

Sinclair’s “Black Watch” was a digital model quartz watch that was introduced in 1975. It had all kinds of problems from losing or gaining time during the changes in hot and cold weather to creating static that would affect its time keeping abilities simply by walking on nylon carpet or having static due to clothing or air conditioning. In addition, it had a battery that could only hold a charge for 10 days. There appeared to be as many returns of this watch as there were sales!

The quartz watch was still a desirable option to explore and many other companies had models of digital quartz watches in the experimental stages and ready to sell. However, the reliable early quartz watches were still about $125 or more — very expensive for the mid-1970s. These newer, more expensive watches were at least able to keep good time. In fact all well-made quartz watches kept very accurate time and in 1976 Texas Instruments introduced a model at the Chicago Consumer Electronic Show that could be produced in mass quantities for a mere $20.

The makings of a quartz watch started with the first watch battery in 1954. Next came the development of the integrated circuit in 1959. With light-emitting diodes (LED)being developed around 1962, all of the elements were in place for a digital quartz watch. In fact, the very first prototype, the Beta 21, came out in 1967. The development of liquid crystal displays (LCD) in 1968 gave digital watches the look they have today. Pulsar is credited with creating the first digital watch in 1970.

The Atomic Clock

Universal time is measured by an atomic clock which runs by using the element, cesium, to keep it going. Just one gram of cesium is enough of a “fuel” to run an atomic clock for one year. Cesium is found in granite and the one gram supply can be extracted from a piece of granite that is about a cubic foot in size.

This silvery metal is in liquid form at room temperature and is considered the most electropositive and alkaline element in the periodic table. It is used as a catalyst in photoelectric cells to react with hydrogen and create the necessary movement of the atoms which create a microwave frequency and natural resonance to define a single second. This cycle used to measure a second is actually made up of exactly 9,192,631,770 oscillations of the cesium atom’s resonant frequency.

Of course the atomic clock is not the type of clock one keeps in their home, but it is the national standard for keeping time in America. For home use, today’s quartz clocks and watches offer a highly precise way of keeping time.

Time has always been important to civilisations throughout history, despite the fact that it is only now, in the modern age that we have come to some understanding of what time is.

The telling of time has always been important, particularly to our agricultural past, when identifying events such as what day on the calendar to plant crops or knowing how long left until nightfall, was crucial.

Our systems of telling the time have always been based around the movement of the Earth. A year is defined as a complete orbit of the Sun whilst a day is a single revolution of our planet.

This solar and lunar method of time telling is fundamental for the way we live our lives, there is no point on having a system of time that would allow days to drift in to nights and vice versa.

Time telling was very basic until the middle-ages when the first mechanical clocks appeared in Europe. Before this time basic water clocks, sundials and other rudimentary timers were the only method of keeping track of the hours as they past.

The first mechanical clocks were not very accurate and relied on a verge-and-foliot escapement (a gear system that advancing the gear train at regular intervals or ‘ticks’), but soon new technologies such as the pendulum meant that clocks became ever increasingly accurate.

The next big step-forward in time-keeping came with the development of the crystal oscillator in the first part of the twentieth century. These new electronic clocks were far more accurate than their mechanical counter-parts as they relied on a vibrating crystal (often quartz) that oscillated when an electrical current was passed through.

Although clocks became smaller and more sophisticated, true accuracy would not be achieved until the development of Atomic Clocks in the 1950’s. The atomic clock used the resonance of individual atoms (in most cases caesium) which had such an exact oscillation of 9,192,631,770 every second that the International System of Units (SI) defined a second as that number of oscillations of the caesium atom.

In fact while electronic clocks may lose a second every week or so, Atomic Clocks will not lose a second within several millions of years.

This increased accuracy, however, has proved to cause some problems. Because of this accuracy it was soon discovered that the Earth’s rotation, that which we had based our system of time on for millennia was in not as accurate as our clocks.

Because of the gravity of the Earth’s moon, the Earth slows down gradually each year. while this slowing of the Earth’s spin is less than a second a year, if it wasn’t accounted for eventually day would slip into night and vice versa (albeit in several millennia) rendering a system of time useless.

The only solution has been to include extra seconds every year or so on to the International Timescale (known as UTC or Coordinated Universal Time). These Leap Seconds as they are called are seen by some as a fudge in keeping time accurate and they wish to abolish them while others (including the world’s astronomers) argue they are essential in keeping track of night and day.

There are plenty of ways of keeping accurate time; the best solution is to use a dedicated NTP server to receive a time signal from an atomic clock time transmission either via a radio signal or the GPS system. Dedicated wall clocks and Ethernet clocks are also available that can receive a time from an atomic clock.

Time is concept that has preoccupied the thoughts of humans since the earliest civilisations. It may only have been in the last century that we have begun to understand time, thanks to the work of Albert Einstein, but measuring its passing has been an important part of society.

Historically time has been measured using the Earth’s rotation and other astronomical cycles such as the phases of the moon. The measuring of time and therefore identifying key events during the day, month or year has been essential for the development of farming, religion and sophisticated societies.

Whilst calendars have been around for millennia, from prehistoric monuments like Stone Henge, thought to indicate the winter and summer solstice and therefore identifying the longest and shortest of days for crop planting, measuring smaller increments of time has proven a technological challenge.

The first clocks were nothing more than timers, using water, burning tapers and sand. These were successful for measuring a set period of time but less useful in identifying how long left until daylight expired or other important events.

The sundial was the first real clock in that it was possible (on a sunny day) to divide the day into equal increments and thus provide a consistent measure of the day.

Mechanical clocks first appeared during the fourteenth century. Whilst their technology was based on simple mechanics and they were less accurate than existing sundials, they did provide a solution to the obvious drawbacks of the sundial (cloudy days).

Mechanical clocks really came into their own once the pendulum was developed in the 1600′s which ensured the existing mechanical clocks could provide better accuracy. The development of mechanical, pendulum driven clocks rocketed throughout the next few centuries and they became increasingly accurate.

However, once it was discovered that certain crystals oscillate at exact rates whilst under the influence of an electronic current, electronic clocks soon took over as people realised they provided far better accuracy.

However, during the 1950′s the atomic clock was developed, these used the oscillation of a single atom (normally caesium) that oscillated at an exact rate each second. Thanks to Atomic Clocks it was soon discovered that the traditional way of using the Earth’s rotation and other astronomical bodies as a basis of time keeping would soon cause problems as the Earth, it was discovered, would slow down or speed up in its rotation due to the effects of the Moon’s gravity.

If nothing was done, then the time told by Atomic Clocks (International Atomic Time- TAI) would eventually run out of synchronisation with the Earth and night would slowly become day.

A solution was found in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) where leap seconds were added to compensate for this slowing of the Earth’s rotation.

UTC and Atomic Clocks have made possible technologies such as satellites, global communication and the Internet. Most computer networks are governed by an atomic clock via a NTP server (Network Time Protocol). NTP servers receive the time signal from an atomic clock from either a radio signal or the USA’s GPS (Global Positioning System) network. This allows computers from across the globe to be synchronised to the same timescale (UTC) allowing time sensitive transactions such as the stock exchange and Internet trading.

Atomic Clocks use the unchanging resonance of atoms during different energy states to measure time providing an atomic tick that occurs nearly 9 billion times a second in the case of the caesium atom. While the accuracy of these stratum 2 servers is unquestionable, it can be affected by the distance the client is from the time servers, they are also outside the firewall meaning that any communication with an online time server requires an open UDP (User Datagram Protocol) port to allow the communication.

This can cause vulnerabilities in the network and are not used for this reason in any system that requires complete security. A more secure (and reliable) method of receiving UTC is to use a dedicated NTP time server. These time synchronisation devices receive the time direct from Atomic Clocks either broadcast on long wave by places like NIST or NPL (National Physical Laboratory – UK). Alternatively UTC can be derived from the GPS signal broadcast by the constellation of satellites in the GPS network (Global Positioning System).

However, the development of digital technology over recent years has been nearly solely reliant on the ultra high precision of an atomic clock. One of the most widely used applications for Atomic Clocks is in the communications industry.

For several years now telephone calls taken in most industrialized countries are now transmitted digitally. However, most telephone wires are simply copper cables (although many telephone companies are now investing in fibre optics) which can only transmit one packet of information at a time. This new type of atomic clock will allow hyper accurate synchronization with other Atomic Clocks, here on Earth (which in effect will make synchronization to an NTP server even more precise).

Pharao is expected to reach accuracies of around one second each 300 million years and will allow further advances in time reliant technologies.

However, these new quantum optical clocks are accurate to a second every 3.4 billion years – almost as long as the earth is old.

For most people, their only encounter with an atomic clock is receiving its time signal is a network time server or NTP device (Network Time Protocol) for the purposes of synchronising devices and networks and these atomic clock signals are generated using caesium clocks.

And until the world’s scientists can agreed on a single atom to replace caesium and a single clock design for keeping UTC, none of us will be able to take advantage of this incredible accuracy.

As with the advance of computer technology that seems to exponentially increase in capability every year, Atomic Clocks too seem to increase dramatically in their accuracy year on year.

Now, those pioneers of atomic clock technology, the US National Institute of Standards Time (NIST), have announced they have managed to produce an atomic clock with accuracy twice that of any clocks that have gone before.

The clock is based in a single aluminium atom and NIST claim it can remain accurate without losing a second in over 3.7 billion years (about the same length of time that life has existed Earth).

The previous most accurate clock was devised by the German Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and was an optical clock based on a strontium atom and was accurate to a second in over a billion years. This new atomic clock by NIST is also an optical clock but is based on aluminium atoms, which according to NIST’s research with this clock, is far more accurate.

Optical clocks use lasers to hold atoms still and differ to the traditional Atomic Clocks used by computer networks using NTP servers (Network Time Protocol) and other technologies which are based on fountain clocks. Not only do these traditional fountain clocks use Caesium as their time keeping atom but instead of lasers they use super-cooled liquids and vacuums to control the atoms.

Thanks to work by NIST, PTB and the UK’s NPL (National Physical Laboratory) Atomic Clocks continue to advance exponentially, however, these new optical Atomic Clocks based on atoms like aluminium, mercury and strontium are a long way from being used as a basis for UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).

UTC is governed by a constellation of caesium fountain clocks that while still accurate to a second in 100,000 years are by far less precise than these optical clocks and are based on technology over fifty years old. And unfortunately until the world’s science community can agree on an atom and clock design to be used internationally, these precise Atomic Clocks will remain a play thing of the scientific community only.

Those chronological pioneers at NIST have teamed up with the University of Colorado and have developed the world’s most accurate atomic clock to date. The strontium based clock is nearly twice as accurate as the current caesium clocks used to govern UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) as it loses just a second every 300 million years.

Strontium based Atomic Clocks are now being seen as the way forward in timekeeping as higher levels of accuracy are attainable that are just not possible with the caesium atom. Strontium clocks, like their predecessors work by harnessing the natural yet highly consistent vibration of atoms.

However, these new generations of clocks use laser beams and extremely low temperatures close to absolute zero to control the atoms and it is hoped it is a step forward to creating a perfectly precise clock.

This extreme accuracy may seem a step too far and unnecessary but the uses for such precision are many fold and when you consider the technologies that have been developed that are based on the first generation of Atomic Clocks such as GPS navigation, NTP server synchronisation and digital broadcasting a new world of exciting technology based on these new clocks could just be around the corner.

While currently the world’s global timescale, UTC, is based on the time told by a constellation of caesium clocks (and incidentally so is t he definition of a second as just over 9 billion caesium ticks), it is thought that when the Consultative Committee for Time and Frequency at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) next meets it will discuss whether to make these next generation of Atomic Clocks the new standard.

However, strontium clocks are not the only method of highly precise time. Last year a quantum clock, also developed at NIST managed accuracy of 1 second in 1 billion years. However, this type of clock can’t be directly monitored and requires a more complex scheme to monitor the time.

Mankind has always been preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time. Timekeeping has been essential for the development of civilisations; from knowing when to plant or harvest crops to identifying important events in the year.

Time has historically been measured in relation to the movement of the Earth; a day, is one revolution of the planet; while a year is an entire orbit of the Sun. Calendars were developed from as far back as 20,000 years ago when hunter-gatherers scratched lines and gouged holes in sticks and bones to possibly count the days between phases of the moon.

Civilizations from the Ancient Egyptians to the Roman Empire have used differing methods to discover what day of the year it is. However, measuring time as it passed throughout the day had always proved difficult to early mankind. Sundials were perhaps the first time pieces and they can trace their origin back over five thousand years; when obelisks were built, possibly to allow the telling of time by the cast of their shadows.

However, the time told on a sundial was based on the movement of the sun in the sky, which would differ throughout the seasons and of course would not work on cloudy days or at night. Other methods such as water clocks or the hourglass would simply act as crude timers. Telling the time of day would prove difficult with people relying on comparisons as time references such as: “As long as it would take a man to walk a quarter mile.”

People were reliant on these methods and others such as bell ringing to indicate important moments until the 14th century, when mechanical clocks first appeared which were driven by weight and regulated by a verge-and-foliot escapement (a gear system that advancing the gear train at regular intervals or ‘ticks’). These clocks were far more reliable than sundials or other methods allowing accurate and reliable telling of the time of day for the first time in human history.

The next step forward in horology came in the 17th century when the pendulum was developed to help clocks maintain their accuracy. Clock making soon became widespread and it was not for another three hundred years that the next revolutionary step in horology would take place; with the development of electronic clocks. These were based on the movement of a vibrating crystal (usually quartz) to create an electric signal with an exact frequency.

While electronic clocks were far more accurate than mechanical clocks it wasn’t until the development of Atomic Clocks and around fifty years ago that modern technologies such as communication satellites, GPS and global computer networks became possible.

Most Atomic Clocks use the resonance of the atom caesium-133 which vibrates exactly at a frequency of 9,192,631,770 every second. Since 1967 the International System of Units (SI) has defined the second as that number of cycles from this atom which makes Atomic Clocks (sometimes called caesium oscillators) the standard for time measurements.

Atomic Clocks are accurate to less than 2 nanoseconds per day, which equates to about one second in 1.4 million years. Because of this accuracy, a universal time scale UTC (Coordinated Universal Time or Temps Universel Coordonné) has been developed that maintains a continuous and stable time scale and supports such features as leap seconds – added to compensate for the slowing of the Earth’s rotation.

However, Atomic Clocks are extremely expensive and are generally only to be found in large-scale physics laboratories. However, NTP servers (Network Time Protocol), the standard means for achieving time synchronisation on computer networks, can synchronise networks to an atomic clock by using either the Global Positioning System (GPS) network or specialist radio transmissions.

Essen’s model was accurate to a second every 300 years but developments of the caesium oscillator mean they can now achieve accuracies of one second every 80 million years.

Yet as technologies get more advanced, scientists strive to make better and more accurate clocks. Rubidium standard clocks offer no better accuracy than caesium models but are smaller and cost less (caesium oscillators are generally only to be found in large-scale physics laboratories).

Clocks using just a single atom have been developed that offer even more accuracy. A clock based on a single mercury atom has achieved accuracies of one second in 400 million years and it is expected that a new type of strontium clock that uses light will go even better.

The future for Atomic Clocks is ever increasing accuracy combined with scaling down the size and cost of them. The American National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have unveiled a chip-sized atomic clock that boasts millisecond accuracy.
