It seems that nearly every car dashboard has a GPS receiver perched on the top. They have become incredibly popular as a navigational tool with many people relying on them solely to work their way around the road networks.

The Global Positioning System has been around for quite a few years now but was originally designed and built for US military applications but was extended for civilian use following an airline disaster.

Whilst it is incredibly useful and convenient a tool, the GPS systems is relatively simple in its operation. The navigation works using a constellation of 30 or so satellites (there are quite a few more that are orbiting but no longer operational).

The signals sent from the satellites contain three pieces of information that are received by the sat nav devices in our cars.

That information includes:

* The time the message was sent

* The orbital position of the satellite (known as the ephemeris)

* The general system health and orbits of the other GPS satellites (known as the almanac)

The way the navigational information is worked out is by using the information from four satellites. The time the signals left the each of the satellites is recorded by the sat nav receiver and the distance from each satellite is then worked out using this information. By using the information from four satellites it possible to work out exactly where the satellite receiver is, this process is known as triangulation.

However, working out exactly where you are in the world does rely on complete accuracy in the time signals that are broadcast by the satellites. As signals such as the GPS travel at the speed of light (approximately 300,000 km a second through a vacuum) even a one second inaccuracy could see positioning information out by 300 kilometres! Currently the GPS system is accurate to five metres which demonstrates just how accurate the timing information broadcast by the satellites is.

This high level of accuracy is possible because each GPS satellite contains Atomic Clocks. Atomic clocks are incredibly accurate relying on the unwavering oscillations of atoms to keep time – in fact each GPS satellite will run for over a million years before it will drift by as much as a second (compared to the average electronic watch which will drift by a second in a week or two)

Because of this high level of accuracy the Atomic Clocks on board GPS satellites can be used as a source of accurate time for the synchronization of computer networks and other devices that require synchronization.

Receiving this time signal requires the use of a NTP GPS server that will synchronize with the satellite and distribute the time to all devices on a network.

This indirect method means that there is often a compromise in accuracy, furthermore if the internet connection goes down or the time server site then the network will soon drift away from UTC.

A far more secure and stable method is to invest in a dedicated NTP time server. These devices receive a time signal directly from an atomic clock, either produced by a national physics lab like NIST or NPL via long wave radio or from GPS satellites.

A single dedicated NTP server will provide a stable, reliable and highly precise source of UTC and allow networks of hundreds and even thousands of devices to be synchronised to NTP.

This can cause vulnerabilities in the network and are not used for this reason in any system that requires complete security. A more secure (and reliable) method of receiving UTC is to use a dedicated NTP time server. These time synchronisation devices receive the time direct from Atomic Clocks either broadcast on long wave by places like NIST or NPL (National Physical Laboratory – UK). Alternatively UTC can be derived from the GPS signal broadcast by the constellation of satellites in the GPS network (Global Positioning System).

Now, those pioneers of atomic clock technology, the US National Institute of Standards Time (NIST), have announced they have managed to produce an atomic clock with accuracy twice that of any clocks that have gone before.

The clock is based in a single aluminium atom and NIST claim it can remain accurate without losing a second in over 3.7 billion years (about the same length of time that life has existed Earth).

The previous most accurate clock was devised by the German Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and was an optical clock based on a strontium atom and was accurate to a second in over a billion years. This new atomic clock by NIST is also an optical clock but is based on aluminium atoms, which according to NIST’s research with this clock, is far more accurate.

Optical clocks use lasers to hold atoms still and differ to the traditional Atomic Clocks used by computer networks using NTP servers (Network Time Protocol) and other technologies which are based on fountain clocks. Not only do these traditional fountain clocks use Caesium as their time keeping atom but instead of lasers they use super-cooled liquids and vacuums to control the atoms.

Thanks to work by NIST, PTB and the UK’s NPL (National Physical Laboratory) Atomic Clocks continue to advance exponentially, however, these new optical Atomic Clocks based on atoms like aluminium, mercury and strontium are a long way from being used as a basis for UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).

UTC is governed by a constellation of caesium fountain clocks that while still accurate to a second in 100,000 years are by far less precise than these optical clocks and are based on technology over fifty years old. And unfortunately until the world’s science community can agree on an atom and clock design to be used internationally, these precise Atomic Clocks will remain a play thing of the scientific community only.

Unfortunately Atomic Clocks are hugely expensive, extremely delicate and quite bulky pieces of equipment, so they are only really to be found in large scale physical laboratories or in highly technical pieces of equipment such as satellites.

Fortunately a dedicated NTP server can synchronize to UTC time using an atomic clock as a reference source by either making us of the national time and frequency transmissions or the GPS (Global Positioning System) network.

Many national physics laboratories such as NPL in the UK, NPL in Germany and NIST in the USA, broadcast a UTC time reference on long wave radio transmission. These signals can be picked up by a NTP server using a radio receiver. Unfortunately the radio transmissions are not broadcast by every country and the signals are finite.

Fortunately the constellation of satellites that make up the USA’s GPS network all have an onboard atomic clock. This signal is used by satellite navigation receivers to work out location but can equally be used by a GPS NTP server as a timing source.

Using either a radio referenced NTP server or GPS time server, synchronization to within a few milliseconds of UTC is possible.

Louis Essen was born in 1908 in a small city in England called Nottingham. His childhood was typical of the time and he pursued his education with enjoyment and dedication. At the age of 20 Louis graduated from the University of Nottingham, where he had been studying. It was at this time that his career started to take off, as he was invited to join the NPL, or National Physics Laboratory.

It was during Louis’s time at the NPL that he began working to develop a quartz crystal oscillator as he believed they were capable of measuring time as accurately as a pendulum based clock. Ten years after joining the NPL Louis had invented the Essen ring. This was an eponymous invention which took its name from the shape of the quartz which Louis had used in his latest clock and which was three times more accurate than the previous versions.

Louis soon moved on to newer areas of research and began to study ways to measure the speed of light. During World War II he began to work on high frequency radar and used his technical ability to develop the cavity resonance wavemeter. From 1946 it was this wavemeter which he used, along with a colleague by the name of Albert Gordon-Smith, to make his lightspeed measurements. It has been acknowledged recently that Louis’s measurements were by far the most accurate to have been recorded up until that time.

During the early part of the 1950′s Louis began to take an interest in research which was being carried out at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in the United States of America. He learnt that work was being carried out to invent a clock which was more accurate than any other. The American scientists were using the idea of maintaining a clock’s accuracy by using the radiation emitted or absorbed by atoms. At that time the Americans were using a molecule of ammonia but Louis felt that this was not working as well as if they were using different atoms, such as hydrogen or caesium, and so he began working on his own clock using these materials instead.

1953 saw Louis and a colleague, Jack Parry, receiving permission to develop an atomic clock at the NPL based on Louis’s existing knowledge of quartz crystal oscillators and other relevant techniques he had learned from the cavity resonance wavemeter he had previously designed. Only two years later Louis’s first atomic clock was running, Caesium I, designed by the UK scientists. Development in the United States had all but stopped due to political difficulties.

Louis continued to work on his atomic clock and by 1964 he had managed to increase the accuracy of the atomic clock from one second in 300 years to one second every 2000 years! The continued success of Louis’s work resulted in the definition of a second being changed from 1/864000 of a mean solar day to being calculated as the time it took for 9192631770 cycles of the radiation in an atomic clock.

Louis Essen died in 1997 and before his death had been honoured with, amongst others, an OBE and the Tompion Gold Medal of the Clockmakers’ Company.

This article provides an overview of atomic clock systems with particular emphasis on their use with NTP server systems for PC and computer network time synchronisation.

Radio Atomic Clock Time References

Radio time transmissions such as the MSF-60 (UK), DCF-77 (Germany) and WWVB (US) time signals broadcast highly accurate time information from a radio transmitter. The time transmissions are derived from an atomic clock time reference, and can be received by timing equipment with a low-cost radio receiver. The MSF-60 radio signal is transmitted from Rugby in the United Kingdom with coverage of the whole of the British Isles and much of North-Western Europe. The DCF-77 time signal is transmitted from Frankfurt, Germany, and covers most of Central Europe. While the WWVB signal is transmitted from Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.

MSF-60 Time Transmission

The MSF-60 time signal is a long wave radio time signal broadcast at 60kHz from Rugby in the UK. The radio signal is maintained by BT Engineering Services. The MSF-60 time signal is generated from extremely accurate Atomic Clocks located at the National Physics Laboratory (NPL). When decoded, it provides a highly accurate timing reference for NTP servers, reference clocks and other computer timing equipment.

DCF-77 Time Transmission

The DCF-77 time signal is a long-wave radio time signal broadcast at 77.5kHz from Mainflingen, near Frankfurt, Germany. The radio signal is maintained by T-Systems, a sub-division of Deuche Telecom, and has been in operation since 1959. The DCF-77 signal is generated from extremely accurate Atomic Clocks located at the German National Physics Laboratory. When decoded, it provides a highly accurate timing reference for clocks and computer timing equipment.

WWVB Time Transmission

The WWVB time signal continuously broadcasts time and frequency signals at 60 kHz from Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. The time reference is maintained by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. WWVB has provided continuous time and frequency broadcasts since 1962. The signal provides a timing reference with an accuracy of less than 100 microseconds.

GPS Atomic Clock Time Reference

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a US military system for worldwide navigation. The system consists of 24 orbiting satellites, each satellite has a highly accurate atomic clock on-board synchronised to UTC time. The satellites continuously broadcast time and position information. The time and position information can be obtained worldwide with a GPS receiver and antenna. GPS works continuously in any whether conditions, anywhere in the world. Additionally, there is no set up fee or subscription charges to utilise the GPS systems. Many computer timing systems and NTP Server systems utilise GPS as an accurate external timing reference. GPS timing is generally much more accurate than radio based timing references.

Computer Time Synchronisation

Accurate computer time synchronisation can be achieved by combining a GPS or Radio timing receiver with a RS232 or USB interface. Software drivers can then be installed on the host PC to obtain accurate time and synchronise the host PC’s system time. Most PC operating systems can be synchronised, including Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003 and XP, LINUX, UNIX and Novell. In many cases, the host PC’s system time can be synchronised to within a few microseconds of the correct time.

Network Time Synchronisation

The standard protocol for achieving computer network time synchronisation is the Network Time Protocol (NTP). NTP is the standard way of distributing time around the Internet and other networks. Stratum 1 NTP servers obtain time from an external timing reference, such as GPS, MSF-60, DCF-77 or WWVB. The external time reference is then used to synchronise the NTP server system time. The synchronised system time is then used by the NTP Server to distribute accurate time to network time clients over an IP network. NTP operates in a hierarchical manner; lower stratum NTP servers obtain time from higher stratum devices.

NTP server systems can synchronise to within a few microseconds of the correct time. Depending on network traffic, NTP time clients can synchronise to within a few milliseconds of a NTP server.
