Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a TCP/IP protocol developed when the internet was in its infancy. It was developed by David Mills of the University of Delaware who was trying to synchronise computers across a network with a degree of precision.

NTP is a UNIX based protocol but it has been ported to operate just as effectively on PCs and a version has been included with operating systems since Windows 2000 (including Windows 7, Vista and XP).

NTP, and the daemon (application) that controls it, is not just a method of passing the time around. Any system running the NTP daemon can act as a client by querying the reference time from other servers or it can make its own time available for other devices to use which in effect turns it into a time server itself. It can also act as a peer by collaborating with other peers to find the most stable and accurate time source to use.

One of the most flexible aspects of NTP is its hierarchical nature. NTP divides devices into strata, each stratum level is defined by its proximity to the reference clock (atomic clock). The atomic clock itself is a stratum 0 device, the closest device to it (often a dedicated NTP time server) is a stratum 1 device whilst other devices that connect to that become stratum 2. NTP can maintain accuracy to within 16 stratum levels.

Any network that needs to be synchronised, has to first identify and locate a time source for NTP to distribute. Internet sources of time are available but thee are often taken from stratum 2 devices that operate through the firewall. The only way NTP can peer the time is if the TCP/IP port is left open to allow the traffic through. This could lead to security issues as malicious users can take advantage of this firewall hole.

Dedicated NTP time servers find a source of time via GPS or radio signals and so don’t leave a network vulnerable to attack. By attaching a NTP time server to a router and entire network of hundreds and even thousands of devices can be synchronised thanks to NTP’s hierarchical structure.

The Quartz Watch

The Americans, Swiss and Japanese all played a part in the invention of the quartz watch. One of the first quartz watches ever built for mass market distribution was made by the Sinclair Company. It had the right idea, using quartz crystals to complete an electrical circuit that would move a mechanical movement in precise increments, but the outer casing and primitive use of the quartz proved disastrous.

Sinclair’s “Black Watch” was a digital model quartz watch that was introduced in 1975. It had all kinds of problems from losing or gaining time during the changes in hot and cold weather to creating static that would affect its time keeping abilities simply by walking on nylon carpet or having static due to clothing or air conditioning. In addition, it had a battery that could only hold a charge for 10 days. There appeared to be as many returns of this watch as there were sales!

The quartz watch was still a desirable option to explore and many other companies had models of digital quartz watches in the experimental stages and ready to sell. However, the reliable early quartz watches were still about $125 or more — very expensive for the mid-1970s. These newer, more expensive watches were at least able to keep good time. In fact all well-made quartz watches kept very accurate time and in 1976 Texas Instruments introduced a model at the Chicago Consumer Electronic Show that could be produced in mass quantities for a mere $20.

The makings of a quartz watch started with the first watch battery in 1954. Next came the development of the integrated circuit in 1959. With light-emitting diodes (LED)being developed around 1962, all of the elements were in place for a digital quartz watch. In fact, the very first prototype, the Beta 21, came out in 1967. The development of liquid crystal displays (LCD) in 1968 gave digital watches the look they have today. Pulsar is credited with creating the first digital watch in 1970.

The Atomic Clock

Universal time is measured by an atomic clock which runs by using the element, cesium, to keep it going. Just one gram of cesium is enough of a “fuel” to run an atomic clock for one year. Cesium is found in granite and the one gram supply can be extracted from a piece of granite that is about a cubic foot in size.

This silvery metal is in liquid form at room temperature and is considered the most electropositive and alkaline element in the periodic table. Time synchronisation in modern computer networks is essential. It not only provides the only frame of reference between all devices, it is critical in everything from securing, planning and debugging a network to providing a time stamp for applications such as data acquisition or email.

Microsoft Windows XP has a time synchronisation utility built into the operating system called Windows Time (w32time.exe) which can be configured to operate as a network time server. It can be configured to both synchronise a network using the internal clock or an external time source.

For many applications, an internal clock can be quite adequate, although, on a network, problems can arise with applications such as sharing network files or in some environments even fraud, so it is vital for security reasons to use an accurate timing source for your network.

NTP (Network Time Protocol) is a protocol already installed on Windows XP and is used by Windows Time to keep machines synchronised to the single time source. There are several timing sources available on the Internet but Microsoft and others strongly recommend that you configure a time server with a hardware source rather than from the Internet where there is no authentication.

Specialist NTP servers are available that can receive a reliable time source via the GPS signal or specialist radio transmissions that get their time from Atomic Clocks.

If you wish to configure Windows XP to operate as a time server then first thing is to locate the Windows Time subkey. To do this:

Run Regedit (Click start/run/then type REGEDIT/and click enter.

Note: editing your system registry can cause problems with your system. It is advisable to back up your system before editing the registry.

Now locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeparameters

Right click the right-hand side and click Modify. In the Edit Value box, under Value Data, type NTP and then click OK.

Right-click in the right-side window and Modify. Edit the DWORD value box and type the number of seconds you want for each poll under Value data, i.e.: 900 will equal 15 minutes. The poll field represents the polling interval between NTP poll packets.

To enable the NTP server locate the subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeTimeProvidersNtpServer

Right click enabled (in the right-hand window) then Modify. Edit the DWORD Value and type 1. Right-click NtpServer, then Modify and in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type Peers, then click OK.

Locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeconfig

In the right pane, right-click MaxPosPhaseCorrection, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Base, click Decimal, under Value Data, type a time in seconds such as 3600 (an hour) then click OK. This adjusts the connection settings.

Now go back and click:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeconfig

In the right pane, right-click MaxNegPhaseCorrection, then Modify.

In the Edit DWORD box under base, click Decimal, under value data type the time in seconds you want to poll such as 3600 (an hour).

Exit Registry then restart windows time service by clicking Start/Run then typing:

net stop w32time && net start w32time.

on each computer, other than the domain controller, type: W32tm/resync/rediscover.

The time server should be now up and running.

Today we shall analyze the bar model, which means Samsung M3510 Beat b. But first of all let’s think why Samsung needed a new series and what the Beat series presumes to be? Furthermore we see a button which seems to be the camera one, but it isn’t, a small orange symbol (looks like a musical note) and the comfortable for the thumb location suggest that this is the dedicated Musica button (it opens the menu with two options: Music player and Music recognition).The bottom edge of the phone is “clean” and we reach the left side where it is located the volume rocker. On the upper edge, next to the left corner, it is the 3.5 mm audio output jack which is closed with a rubber cork.The rear side is almost entirely taken by the battery lid, which unveils the 800 mAh battery, the SIM slot and the one for microSD card. So, the memory card is not hot swappable, fact that can be a little annoying for some people. Above the battery lid is located the 2Mp camera module and that’s all here. The front panel besides the usual elements as the screen and keyboard, has also music player dedicated buttons, which are situated between the display and the control keypad. The management keypad is usual: the D-pad on the center, two soft keys and the call keys. The alphanumerical buttons are comfortable, of a satisfactory size – no complains here. The only thing that spoils a little the navigation process is the navigation keys, which are located too close to the D-pad and sometimes they can be pushed accidentally. However, this is a matter of accommodation, after some time, the mistakes are fewer and fewer.

Menu and software
The desktop of Samsung M3510 Beat b has no specialties and is standard, this is not a smartphone. To access the menu you may think to press the OK key from the D-pad, but you will start the browser this way. The menu is opened with the left soft key and here the “OK” button is ok. All the four directions of the D-pad are shortcuts to different submenus or items, but only two can be changed by the user (left and right), the other two are already predefined for the digital camera (down) and for My Menu (up).The menu is arranged as a 3×4 grid and the icons, as well as the desktop, can be changed with the preinstalled themes. The icons look as well as their order is similar with the ones from U800 Soul b, except two of them. This practice is standard for Samsung and many other manufacturers, that’s why two models relatively from the same class, released in a medium period of time (1 year) will never have radical different menus. There are three applications: “Motion beatbox”, “Dice” and “Lottery” – the most suggestive is the first one, if you ask us, it works like this: two different tracks are assigned for each direction, left and right (the user can change them at will) and when you shake the phone in one of the directions, it plays the respective song. However, we was disappointed hearing only one song, no matter how hard we have tried, the phone had been able to detect only one direction. We also admit that the phone may have had a technical hitch at this point.

Music Player, Music Recognition and Motion Control
As we could expect from a Beat edition member, the music player is well realized from the esthetical point of view of the UI as well as functional. While listening to music, we can see on the screen the equalizer, the name of the artist and of the song of course. Also there is the song duration and its progress, plus the controls of the D-pad. The arrangement can be changed and there are some predefined schemes. M3510 Beat b uses music styles instead of presets, however, once a style is chosen, the equalizer is also automatically tuned accordingly.The music can be chosen by numerous criteria, recently played, most played, by genre, by artist etc. in the player settings we have found a new feature for most of the phones – “Music auto off”, the function is similar with the one from TVs. An inconvenience can be the fact that there are only time presets available and the feature is not linked with the phone clock, which would have been logically and conveniently. However, there are many people that fall asleep with the headset in the ears, so this addition is quite welcomed.Also in the player settings, the Motion Control can be turned on or off. Talking about this control – it’s clear that the idea was borrowed mainly from Sony Ericsson (Shake Control) and a little from Nokia (especially from Nokia 8800 Arte which mutes or ends a call when turned up side down). However, at the walkman phones it works well, while we couldn’t change a song with our M3510 Beat b no matter in what direction we were shaking the phone. Another difference is the button that must be pressed to use the shake control in the walkman phones, while M3510 lacks it – both variants has pluses and minuses. We are happy that at least the other two motion controls are working. When turning the phone up side down, the music stops. When the phone plays a song and is tapped (with the finger is most conveniently) on the screen, the music is paused. Another tapping resume the song. The problem is that the tap needs to be more like a hit and you’re not thinking to music, but to your phone integrity. That’s why we were forced to slap the phone several times until a “good” one was pausing the music – this action looks like you intend to destroy the phone and we doubt the usefulness of this method especially because the phone lies on the camera module.As we’ve mentioned at the beginning, M3510 is equipped with DNSe™ audio processor. The sound is really different compared with other “music amateur” phones, being clear and qualitative. A single fact disturbs us a little: the speaker is only one, for both loud ringtones and voice conversations. Being twice more used, with the time, the speaker can weaken and result in a low quality conversation. The phone we have tested was new and even at maximum volume the sound was good and the speaker had not given “signs of weakness”. Let’s hope that Samsung had calculated everything, but in a musical bar phone, there is enough space for separated speakers (like in Nokia 5310 for example).In the Music menu, besides Music player there is one more item – Music recognition. Of course, we know this feature from the Walkman series (Track ID) and we are happy that here it works as well as on Sony Ericsson phones. When you hear a song which beats enjoy your heart, but you do not know the name of the song to have it – Samsung M3510 Beat b is the savior, it is enough to record about 10 sec of the song which the program will analyze it and return the name of the song and of the artist. More of that, Music recognition is also available while listening the FM radio with RDS, it can be found in the Options menu.

Digital camera
Samsung M3510 Beat b it is equipped with a 2Mp digital camera without autofocus and flash. Being a music phone, it is obvious that the camera is not one of the best. However, the pictures are not bad and the camera menu is traditional for Samsung, with enough options. Other comments are not necessary here.

Conclusion
The appearance of a new series is always good news. Launching the Beat edition, Samsung desires to offer something that is already available at its competitors plus a little more. That’s why Samsung M3510 Beat b is the first model which comes to fulfill this task and it almost succeeds.The modern design, the 3.5mm audio output jack, the music player combined with motion controls plus the dedicated buttons and the included memory card makes from M3510 not only a perfect substitution of the traditional portable music player. When you set your watch by the speaking clock or the radio beeps have you ever wondered who is responsible for setting that time and how they can be sure it is accurate.

This may seem like a straightforward question but their is no master clock that the world can tune in to but we do have the next best thing called UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). UTC is a global timescale based on the time told by Atomic Clocks (International Atomic Time).

As the time kept by Atomic Clocks is so accurate (a second is not gained or lost in several hundred million years using current atomic clock technology) it is far more accurate than existing timescale such as GMT (Greenwich Meantime). The problem being that the Earth is not precise in its rotation, slowing down every now and again due to the effects of the Moon’s gravity. To compensate for this UTC adds ‘Leap Seconds’ so as to keep it in-line with GMT (and to keep the Sun above the meridian line at noon and prevent the gradual drift of night into day).

UTC is governed by a constellation of Atomic Clocks, this ensures greater accuracy as an average is taken of all the times (although difference are in nano-seconds (billionths of a second) and also this method prevent any one country having political control of UTC.

The fundamental measurement of time is the second. Before Atomic Clocks a second was simply a division of the number of seconds in a 24 hour period (86,400 seconds in a day). However since the development of Atomic Clocks a second has been defined by the International System of Units as the resonance of the caesium -133 atom, used in Atomic Clocks and oscillates 9,192,631,770 every second.

Computers need to not only be synchronized to their network but and time sensitive transactions with other networks, computers or over the Internet also require synchronization. For this reason a global standardised time scale is used to allow all computers across the globe to synchronise to the exact same time source. This global scale is called UTC (Universal Coordinated Time).

UTC time is based on International Atomic Time (TAI) which is the time as told by an international collective of Atomic Clocks (260 in 40 different laboratories around the globe) where an average is taken meaning that TAI is accurate to within one second every three million years.

UTC time has leap seconds added (or taken away) every year or so to compensate with the slowing (and occasional speeding up) of the Earths rotation as our planet is actually 100,000 times less reliable than an atomic clock and without leap seconds noon would eventually become midnight (albeit in 40,000 years or so).

Computers use a protocol called NTP (Network Time Protocol) which can receive a UTC time signal either through the Internet or via a specialist radio transmission from a physics laboratory or via the GPS network.

But ensuring every computer on a network has the exact same time is simple thanks to two technologies: the atomic clock and the NTP server (Network Time Protocol).

Atomic Clocks are extremely accurate chronometers. They can keep time and not drift by as much of a second in thousands of years and it is this accuracy that has made possible technologies and applications such as satellite navigation, online trading and GPS.

Time synchronization for computer networks is controlled by the network time server, commonly referred to as the NTP server after the time synchronization protocol they use, Network Time Protocol.
When it comes to choosing a time server, there are really only two real type – the radio reference NTP time server and the GPS NTP time server.

Radio reference time servers receive the time from long wave transmission broadcast by physics laboratories like NIST in North America or NPL in the UK. A time server is computer hardware that performs the function of obtaining accurate time from a timing reference and transfers this time to network infrastructure and other clients. There are many time servers that reside on the Internet and serve accurate time. However, many organisations have their own independent time servers located on their local network, or intranet.

A time server utilises an external hardware clock to obtain precise timing information. There are a number of hardware clocks that a time server may utilise to obtain accurate time. One of the most common external hardware clock references is the Global Positioning System, or GPS. GPS satellites provide highly accurate timing and positioning information. The timing component of GPS transmissions is accurate to within a couple of hundred nanoseconds of the correct time. There is also a number of National time and frequency radio broadcasts available. The WWVB signal is transmitted from Colorado and is available throughout the USA. The DCF-77 radio time signal is broadcast from Frankfurt, Germany, and is available throughout much of Central and Western Europe. While, the MSF-60 radio time signal is transmitted from Anthorn in Cumbria, UK, and can be received throughout much of North-Western Europe. A time server may also be configured to get time from other time servers in a hierachical structure of time servers.

A time server may be an existing file server that also provides timing information in addition to it’s primary function as a file server. Alternatively, it may be a dedicated device whose only function is to provide time to client computers on the network. Many dedicated time server systems incorporate precision hardware time references that help maintain accurate time in the event of failure of external time signals. A dedicated time server often contains a temperature or oven controller crystal oscillator or enen a rubidium oscillator to maintain accurate time. A Rubidium crystal may typically lose only a few milliseconds per year.

There are a number of computer network protocols that have been developed for computer time dissemination. Many computer timing protocols have become obsolete to be replaced by a single standard. The most common protocol used for time transfer between computers is NTP – the Network Time Protocol. The Network Time Protocol is one of the oldest protocols still in use today. It was developed over 25 years ago as a means of transfering accurate time around the internet. The protocol basically defines a set of algorithms and specifies data-structures for the transfer of time between computers. NTP operates in a hierarchical manner, with a level 1, or stratum 1, time server sitting at the top of the tree and filtering time information to lower stratum time servers. The lower the stratum of the time server, the further away it is from the reference server and hence less accurate.

Oscillators have been essential in the development of clocks and chronology. Oscillators are just electronic circuitry that produces a repetitive electronic signal. Often crystals such as quartz are used to stabilise the frequency of the oscillation.

Oscillators are the primary technology behind electronic clocks. Digital watches and battery powered analogue clock are all controlled by an oscillating circuit usually containing a quartz crystal.

And while electronic clocks are many times more accurate than a mechanical clock, a quartz oscillator will still drift by a second or two each week.

Atomic clocks of course are far more accurate. They still, however, use oscillators, most commonly caesium or rubidium but they do so in a hyper fine state often frozen in liquid nitrogen or helium. These clocks in comparison to electronic clocks will not drift by a second in even a million years (and with the more modern Atomic Clocks 100 million years).

To utilise this chronological accuracy a network time server that uses NTP (Network Time Protocol) can be used to synchronise complete computer networks. NTP servers use a time signal from either GPS or long wave radio that comes direct from an atomic clock (in the case of GPS the time is generated in a clock onboard the GPS satellite).

NTP servers continually check this source of time and then adjust the devices on a network to match that time. In between polls (receiving the time source) a standard oscillator is used by the time server to keep time. Normally these oscillators are quartz but because the time server is in regular communication with the atomic clock say every minute or two, then the normal drift of a quartz oscillator is not a problem as a few minutes between polls would not lead to any measurable drift.

However, there are some occasions when a time server can lose connection with the atomic clock and not receive the time code for a prolonged period of time. Sometimes this may be because of downtime by the atomic clock controllers for maintenance or that nearby interference is blocking the transmission.

Obviously the longer the signal is down the more potential drift may occur on the network as the crystal oscillator in the NTP server is the only thing keeping time. For most applications this should never be a problem as the most prolonged period of downtime is not normally more than three or four hours and the NTP server would not have drifted by much in that time and the occurrence of this downtime is quite rare (maybe once or twice a year).

However, for some ultra precise high end applications rubidium crystal oscillators are beginning to be used as they don’t drift as much as quartz. Rubidium (often used in Atomic Clocks themselves instead of caesium) is far more accurate an oscillator than quartz and provides better accuracy for when there is no signal to a NTP time server allowing the network to maintain a more accurate time.

Rubidium itself is an alkali metal, similar in properties to potassium. It is very slightly radioactive although poses no risk to human health (and is often used in medicine imaging by injecting it into a patient). It has a half life of 49 billion years (the time it takes to decay by half – in comparison some of the most lethal radioactive materials have half-lives of under a second).

The MSF time signal is a dedicated radio broadcast providing an accurate and reliable source of UK civil time, based on the global time scale UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the MSF signal is broadcast and maintained by the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

The Windows Time service (W32Time) is designed to allow all Windows 2000 or later machines in an organisation to utilise a synchronised time. The service is used to ensure the security of the Windows Kerberos authentication protocol. This article describes the procedure to set up an Authoritative Time Server for a Windows 2003 Server based Active Directory Network. It also describes the hierarchical relationship of the time synchronisation authority. The article also presents some time synchronisation hints, tips and troubleshooting.

The ‘Windows Time’ Hierarchy.

The Windows Time Service uses a hierarchical synchronisation structure. By default, Windows computers utilise the following hierarchy:

- All time client workstations nominate their domain controller as their time synchronisation source.

- All member servers also nominate their domain controller as their time synchronisation source.

- All domain controllers in a domain nominate the primary domain controller (PDC) as their time synchronisation source.

- All Primary Domain controllers follow the hierarchy of domains in the selection of their time synchronisation source.

In the hierarchy the PDC emulator in the forest root domain is the primary time reference for the organisation. The PDC in the forest root domain can have its internal reference clock controlled in a number of ways:

- By utilising it’s own internal system clock. However, unsynchronised system clocks will drift significantly over time.

- By synchronising to an Internet based NTP time server. An accurate time can be obtained from an Internet NTP server, however, this raises security issues since accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Also, the NTP port in the firewall must be left open for synchronisation. Additionally, Internet based NTP servers cannot provide authentication, so the source of time cannot be guaranteed.

- By synchronising with a local intranet based NTP time server. A local NTP server has the advantage of providing a traceable time reference and also secure authentication.

- By utilising a hardware reference clock such as a GPS or time and frequency radio based time transmission. A GPS or radio based hardware reference clock provides a secure traceable time reference.

Configuration of the Windows Time Service is carried out by editing registry entries. It is highly recommended that the registry be backed up before conducting any modifications. This allows the registry to be restored in the event of erroneous modification.

To configure the PDC master to utilise its internal system clock requires only that the W32Time registry entry ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags’ is set to ‘A’. This makes the PDC announce itself as a reliable time source. However, the system clock can drift over time and is not referenced to an accurate time source. Additionally, Windows Time will periodically generate system event log warnings indicating that the PDC should be configured to synchronise to an external time source. This warning can be ignored.

To configure the PDC to to synchronise to an external time reference, the following registry entries must be modified:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type

This registry entry specifies the types of peers that the Windows Time Service will synchronise to. Change the registry entry to ‘NTP’ to synchronise to an external NTP server.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags

The ‘Announce Flags’ registry entry indicates that the PDC should announce itself as a reliable time source. Set this registry entry to the value ‘5′.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer

The ‘NtpServer’ registry indicates that non-standard mode combinations are allowed in synchronisation between peers. This entry should be set to the value 1.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer

The ‘NtpServer’ registry entry contains a space-delimited list of stratum 1 time servers from which the PDC can obtain time. If DNS names are used rather than IP addresses, you must append 0×1 to the end of each DNS name.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient\SpecialPollInterval

The ‘Special Poll Interval’ registry entry indicates the period, in seconds, between each poll of a NTP server. Microsoft recommends a value of 900 seconds which transposes to one poll every 15 minutes.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\MaxPosPhaseCorrection

The ‘MaxPosPhaseCorrection’ field indicates the maximum positive time correction in seconds that the time service can make. If a time correction larger than the maximum is required the time service logs an Event in the Event Log. If this field is set to 0xFFFFFFFF a time correction is always made regardless of size. A suitable value may be 3600 seconds (1 hour).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\MaxNegPhaseCorrection

The ‘MaxNegPhaseCorrection’ field indicates the maximum negative time correction in seconds that the time service can make. If a time correction larger than the maximum is required the time service logs an Event in the Event Log. If this field is set to 0xFFFFFFFF a time correction is always made regardless of size. A suitable value may be 3600 seconds (1 hour).

After the registry entries have been correctly modified, the Windows Time service must be stopped and restarted. At a command prompt enter ‘net stop w32time && net start w32time’ to restart the service.

Hints and Tips.

The correct operation of the Windows Time service depends heavily on the correct functioning of network devices and infrastructure. Common problems such as TCP/IP connectivity, DNS resolution, inaccurate NTP time references and network delay can all cause problems with the synchronisation service. Additionally, when synchronising to an Internet NTP server, ensure that USP port 123 is open on the firewall. UDP port 123 is the port reserved for NTP communication packets.
